What is the best way to find a specific patent?

The quickest way to find a specific patent is to use the Quick Search box, which is on the left-hand side of every page. Make sure that Patent is selected from the drop-down menu.

For most patents you should search the patent as an 8-digit number. Add leading zeros if your patent number is less than eight digits. Do not add a country code in front of the number. Omit any publication designations, such as A, A1 or A2.

However from December 31st 2003 the WIPO changed its patent number format to 10 digits, four for the year and six for the serial. IDdb has followed suit, so to retrieve a patent record published by the WIPO on or after 31 December 2003, ten digits are required.
