How are structures selected for patent reports?

Standard IDdb patent reports often contain chemical structures taken from the published patent document. A specific structure is chosen, selected according to four criteria:

  1. a specifically claimed and preferred compound;
    or
  2. a specifically claimed compound, with due regard to biological potency;
    or
  3. a specifically claimed compound;
    or
  4. a compound exemplified by synthesis, with due regard to the scope of the generic claim.
In other words, the first choice is a specifically claimed and preferred compound, and one with the greatest biological activity. If no compounds are preferred, then the compound chosen is the one with the highest activity from the specifically claimed compounds. When there are no biological data, or the biological tests do not include a specifically claimed compound, then a specifically claimed compound is chosen. Where there are no specifically claimed compounds and no biological data, a compound exemplified in the examples is chosen.

In addition, since October 1996 generic structures have been included where applicable.
